That's why it's important to know our bodies. However, the female genitalia (vulva, clitoral organ, vagina, uterus) is one of the least researched organs of the human body. The detailed anatomy of the clitoris, for example, is difficult to capture through macroscopic dissection, as most of its parts are internal and surrounded by the pubic bone and several pelvic organs. Although clinical imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging can capture the gross 3D morphology, they lack the spatial resolution required to image the detailed structures.

The scientific study of the female genital nerves has made considerable progress in recent years, particularly thanks to new imaging techniques and 3D models (as of 2026). The clitoris has emerged as a highly complex, central organ of female sexuality with a dense network of nerves.
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://vg05.met.vgwort.de/na/62122fdaf2a54966a7cc7b31127bb30b" width="1" height="1" alt=""">

In this article, I summarize the most important findings about the female genitalia, because knowing your body well is the best way to explore and use its potential: The more I know, the hotter it can get!

Which nerves and for what

Various nerves form the internal nervous structure of the female genitalia. These transmit the tactile signals to the brain. Here they are read and finally interpreted as individually sexually relevant (= arousing) - or less so. You can read about which nerve and what it is responsible for in this section.

The pudendal nerve (or pudendal nerve) and the clitoris

The clitoris - or rather the clitoral organ - has the highest nerve density. It contains over 8,000 to 10,000 nerve endings. The most important sensory nerve, the pundendus, forms a tree-like network that extends to the tip of the clitoris. It originates from the sacral nerve plexus. New 3D models show that the nerve plexus extends far beyond the visible clitoris and into the vulvar mound, the vulval lips and the clitoral hood. This nerve is primarily responsible for sexual sensations. Its nerve endings convert tactile stimuli into signals and transmit them to the brain via the spinal cord. If these signals are interpreted as sexually arousing, the brain reacts by increasing blood flow to the genitals, i.e. the arousal reflex is triggered and we perceive this change (tingling, getting wet, etc.).

In addition to the sensitive nerves that are responsible for touch and pleasure, there are autonomic nerves that control blood flow and are responsible for the swelling of the clitoris and the dilation of the vagina when aroused.

The vagus nerve and the vagina

The vagina is less densely covered with nerves than the clitoris, especially in the upper area. The uterus is supplied by a special ganglion plexus (Frankenhäuser plexus) at the edges of the uterus.

One of the most erogenous zones is the CUV zone (clitoris-urethra-vagina zone), an interplay of the clitoris, urethra and the anterior vaginal wall.

The vagus nerve plays a fascinating and often underestimated role in the female genitalia, as it provides a direct connection between the brain and pelvis that bypasses the spinal cord (it is one of the ten cranial nerves).

What is the vagus nerve good for?

The vagus nerve is our spinal cord bypass for pleasure. In contrast to the pudendal nerve, which conducts stimuli via the spinal cord, the vagus nerve runs directly from the brain stem to the internal organs.

It transmits sensory information from the cervix and the upper vaginal wall directly to the brain.

This anatomical peculiarity explains, for example, why women with a complete spinal cord injury can still experience orgasms. The stimuli from the cervix and the upper vaginal wall reach the brain via the vagus nerve, even if the nerve pathways in the spinal cord are interrupted.

But it is not only in such extreme cases that the vagus nerve plays an important role as the central pleasure nerve:

As the main nerve of the parasympathetic nervous system, the vagus nerve is essential for a state of sexual relaxation and surrender.

When the vagus nerve is activated, it promotes blood flow to the genitals and natural lubrication. Stimulation of the vagus nerve via the vagina is associated with the release of oxytocin, which increases the feeling of bonding and the intensity of orgasm.

In addition, the vagus nerve is also involved in regulating ovulation and hormone production in the ovaries. Low vagal tone (the fitness of the nerve) is associated with hormonal imbalances and inflammatory processes such as PCO syndrome.

Voice and desire

The connection to the throat is scientifically interesting: As the vagus nerve also innervates the vocal cords, there is a neurological link between relaxation of the voice (e.g. through deep breathing or tones) and relaxation of the pelvic floor.

In summary, the vagus nerve is the key to a holistic sexual experience that goes beyond purely mechanical stimuli and translates emotional security into physical arousal.

How can the vagus tone be strengthened?

There are various scientifically based approaches to specifically strengthen vagal tone and thus promote sexual sensitivity and the general ability to relax in the pelvis. The aim is to bring the body out of stress mode (sympathetic nervous system) and into pleasure mode (parasympathetic nervous system) more quickly.

Here are a few examples

1. deep diaphragmatic breathing

This is the quickest way to stimulate the vagus nerve. Breathe deeply into the abdomen (the abdominal wall rises) and exhale for twice as long (e.g. 4 seconds in, 8 seconds out).

The long exhalation immediately signals to the vagus nerve that there is no danger. This lowers the cortisol level and opens the sensory perception for genital stimuli.

2. the larynx-cymbal connection (sounding)

As the vagus nerve innervates the vocal cords, vibration in the throat activates the nerve directly. Humming or deep humming during self-stimulation or during sex fulfills this purpose.

The vibration in the larynx reflexively relaxes the muscles of the pelvic floor and vagina, as these are neurologically linked.

3. cold stimuli

A short cold shock resets the nervous system and increases vagus activity. A cold face wash or a short cold shower (especially neck and chest).

This triggers the so-called diving reflex, which lowers the heart rate and activates the vagus nerve.

4. gentle massage of the external auditory canal

A small branch of the vagus nerve runs directly under the skin of the external auditory canal. Use your little finger to gently massage the auricle and the entrance to the ear canal.

This can have an immediate calming effect on the entire nervous system.

5. focus on cervical stimulation

As already mentioned, the vagus nerve transmits stimuli from the cervix directly to the brain.

Slow, mindful stimulation (e.g. as in yoni mapping) can improve and intensify the nerve pathways of the vagus nerve and signal transmission over time.

6. pelvic floor release (instead of just training)

Often only pelvic floor training is recommended, which only consists of tensing. However, consciously letting go is more important for the vagus nerve.

Instead, try squatting down, for example, and while you're there, breathe deeply into your pelvis and feel how your pelvic floor expands as you breathe in.

7. the vagus pelvic wave (5-minute exercise)

This exercise combines diaphragmatic breathing with the neurological connection between the jaw and pelvis. The aim is to activate the vagus nerve and at the same time reflexively expand the pelvic floor.

Sit upright on the front edge of a chair or lie flat on your back with your knees gently drawn up. Place one hand on your lower abdomen (directly over your pubic bone) and the other on your heart.

Leave your lower jaw completely loose so that the rows of teeth do not touch. Your mouth may be slightly open. Important: A tense jaw directly blocks the vaginal muscles' ability to relax via the vagus nerve.

Breathe deeply into your belly through your nose. Imagine how your breath flows deep into your pelvic floor. You may notice how your pelvic floor gently stretches downwards and outwards against your clothes.

Breathe out through your slightly open mouth and make a deep, soft "Haaa" or a humming "Mmm". Try to make the exhalation about twice as long as the inhalation (e.g. 4 seconds in, 8 seconds out).

The vibration in the larynx stimulates the vagus nerve, while the long exhalation gently raises the pelvic floor again without tensing it.

Do this for about 10 breaths. Concentrate exclusively on the feeling of expansion as you inhale.

Why it works:

By tapping and consciously loosening your jaw, you use the vagus nerve as a dedicated line to the pelvis. This signals absolute safety to your nervous system. In this state, the nerve endings in the genital area are much more receptive to subtle stimuli, as the brain is no longer busy processing stress signals.

Practical tip: Try to smile slightly during this exercise. A vagus smile relaxes the facial muscles, which further strengthens the parasympathetic response throughout the body.

The hypogastric nerve (hypogastric nerve)

The lower abdominal nerve supplies the uterus sympathetically and is responsible for controlling muscle tension, blood flow and the transmission of pain stimuli.

The nerve conducts sympathetic impulses. The sympathetic activation tends to lead to an increase in muscle tension (contraction) of the uterine wall.

It transports sensory information from the uterus back to the spinal cord and is significantly involved in the transmission of pain stimuli that originate in the uterus and ovaries.

Conclusion

The entire clitoral organ, regardless of whether it is stimulated from the outside - via the clitoral pearl - or from the inside - via the vagina - plays a central role in a woman's pleasure. Equally important, however, is stimulation via the vagus nerve, which occurs through the conscious perception of the interior - the vagina.

The vagina also plays a central role in female pleasure. We just need to know and learn how to invite them to play!

What I know makes me hot!
