Does that mean I’m not enough for him?’"

I hear these or similar questions time and again in my practice. Few topics are discussed as controversially as pornography. For some, it’s a risk to their relationship; for others, it’s a resource for a fulfilling sex life. But what does science actually say?

The answer surprises many people: It depends.

Research shows neither that pornography generally harms relationships nor that it generally benefits them. Rather, the decisive factors are the intensity of consumption, whether it is viewed openly or in secret, the attitudes of both partners, and whether pornography is consumed together or alone.

When can pornography become a problem?

Several longitudinal studies show that negative effects occur particularly when

Pornography is consumed in secret,

consumption leads to recurring conflicts,

unrealistic sexual expectations arise,

Pornography is increasingly replacing real-life sexual contact, or

a person perceives the consumption as a breach of trust.

Conversely, studies also show neutral or even positive correlations when

both partners accept pornography,

it is shared,

it is discussed openly and

it does not serve as a substitute for intimacy.

Under what conditions does pornography become a resource—and under what conditions does it become a risk?

In the following, we will examine both the potential opportunities and risks of pornography with regard to various aspects of a relationship. In doing so, we will pose some key questions to encourage self-reflection.

Can pornography be a resource?

If we understand sexuality—as Jean-Yves Desjardins, the founder of the Sexocorporel approach, describes it—as a physical and emotional process of self-regulation, then the answer to this question is definitely yes.

From this perspective, pornography is, at first glance, neither pathological nor fundamentally harmful, but rather a form of sexual stimulation.

The crucial questions are, rather:

What is the purpose of pornography?

What physical arousal patterns are established in the process?

Does it foster encounters, or does it replace them?

Does it promote self-regulation, or does it serve to compensate for unresolved deficits?

The Sexocorporel model defines arousal patterns as the way in which a person, during sexual self-stimulation, uses physical resources—particularly movement, breathing, rhythm, and body tension—to build and control arousal.

From a body-oriented perspective, the key question is not only what triggers sexual arousal in a person, but also how the body has learned to build up arousal.

From a body-oriented perspective, pornography can become problematic if it leads to a narrowing of sexual stimulation. This is the case, for example, when sexual arousal is built up primarily according to a mechanical, forceful pattern with little variation, or when sensory stimulation focuses almost exclusively on visual stimuli and other senses increasingly take a back seat.

Mainstream porn often depicts precisely this pattern of arousal. This can lead young people, in particular, to adopt this mechanical pattern, which is based on pressure and high muscle tension.

If, over the course of years, sexual arousal is associated almost exclusively with visual stimuli, certain fantasies, or a consistently repetitive pattern of stimulation, it can become more difficult to experience the same intensity during a real-life encounter.

The good news is that our brains are plastic and therefore capable of learning throughout our lives. New physical experiences, mindful touch, and a greater variety of sensory stimuli can help broaden our patterns of sexual arousal, making them more flexible, less prone to disruption, and more compatible with our partners.

It becomes particularly problematic when pornography and masturbation increasingly replace sexual contact with a partner within the relationship.

Conversely, however, pornography can also expand the imagination, foster sexual curiosity, and enrich erotic communication between partners—especially when shared together.

Perhaps the most important question, then, is:

How does pornography affect the body's ability to experience pleasure with a real person?

Sexuality, Attachment Styles, and Pornography

Research is increasingly showing that it is not pornography consumption alone that determines whether a relationship is strained. Rather, an individual’s attachment style appears to be a decisive factor.

Several studies show that pornography consumption has little effect on sexual and relationship satisfaction among people in secure attachments. For them, pornography—if they consume it at all—remains just one sexual activity among many and is not given undue importance in the relationship.

Pornography and Anxious Attachment

People with an anxious attachment style are more likely to perceive their partner's pornography consumption as competition, rejection, or an emotional threat.

They tend to take pornography consumption more personally and interpret it as competition or as a sign of a lack of attractiveness or love. This can heighten feelings of jealousy, fear of loss, and the need for control, and further intensify existing insecurities within the relationship.

Pornography and Avoidant Attachment

For people with an avoidant attachment style, pornography can serve as a form of emotional self-regulation.

The need for autonomy and emotional distance is often particularly pronounced in this attachment style. Closeness is sometimes experienced as a restriction or even a threat. Pornography and masturbation allow for sexual satisfaction without having to open up emotionally or show vulnerability.

From the perspective of attachment theory, pornography is thus not primarily used to experience pleasure, but rather to regulate closeness and distance.

Can pornography contribute to a lack of differentiation?

To answer this question, it is worth first taking a look at the concept of differentiation.

American couples therapist David Schnarch describes differentiation as the ability to remain true to oneself within a close relationship. It involves being able to express one’s own desires, needs, and values without becoming dependent on one’s partner’s approval or disapproval.

People with a high degree of differentiation can allow themselves to be close to others without losing themselves, and can tolerate conflict without withdrawing or feeling the need to control their partner.

Against this backdrop, pornography can serve various functions.

According to Schnarch, it can, for example, serve to avoid potential rejection. Those who don’t dare to discuss their sexual desires or fantasies with their partner may act them out exclusively through the secret use of pornography. Similarly, pornography can be used to avoid intimacy and to avoid having to reveal one’s own needs or vulnerability.

Pornography then becomes a strategy for keeping emotional closeness at a distance.

On the other hand, a highly self-aware person can consume pornography without it becoming a secret or replacing their shared sexuality. What matters is not the consumption itself, but its significance within the relationship.

In this case, sexuality remains a dynamic dialogue characterized by openness, mutual respect, and emotional connection.

What does the latest research say?

Recent research is also increasingly moving in this direction. The key finding of current research is:

It is not pornography alone that determines whether it harms a relationship, but rather the way it is embedded in the dynamics of the relationship.

Conclusion

As a sex therapist, I frequently encounter people in my practice who claim to be addicted to porn and say that this is putting their relationship at risk.

Upon closer examination, however, it often becomes clear that the amount consumed is not the only decisive factor. Rather, the question is what role pornography plays in the life of the person in question.

It is precisely at this point that the complexity of the issue becomes clear. Nor is there always a clear-cut answer to the question of whether increased use of pornographic material should actually be diagnosed as an addiction-like problem or is rather an expression of strong sexual motivation. The sexological debate on this topic remains unresolved to this day.

In therapeutic work, therefore, a longer process is usually necessary to understand the various levels of sexual activity. This involves not only the sexual behavior itself, but also emotional, physical, and relationship-related factors.

My clinical experience has shown time and again that many people affected by this issue get caught in a cycle that is difficult for them to break on their own. Pornography can then increasingly become a strategy for regulating unpleasant feelings.

Often, heavy use is not primarily driven by a particularly strong libido or excessive sexual desire, but rather by feelings such as emptiness, boredom, stress, loneliness, frustration, or feeling overwhelmed.

In these cases, pornography becomes an easily accessible way to calm oneself in the short term or to block out unpleasant emotions. The problem is that this form of self-regulation usually does not address the underlying causes. This often creates a cycle in which consumption provides short-term relief but, in the long term, can intensify feelings of guilt, shame, relationship conflicts, or a sense of loss of control.

Therapeutic work is therefore not focused exclusively on reducing pornography use. Rather, the key is to work together to understand the underlying needs and identify alternative ways to develop self-regulation.

Equally important is the question of how sexuality can once again be experienced as something that not only serves to regulate tension but also fosters connection, intimacy, and vitality.

Perhaps that is why the most important question is not:

"Is pornography good or bad?"

Rather:

"What role does pornography play in my life—and does it support my relationship with myself and with my partner, or does it make it more difficult?"

______________________________________________________________________________________________________

A Quick Self-Test

The following questions do not constitute a scientifically validated test and are not a substitute for a professional diagnosis. However, they can help you critically reflect on your own behavior.

The more often you answer “yes” to several of these questions, and the more your daily life or your relationship is affected as a result, the more it may make sense to take a closer look at the issue or seek professional help.

Has your partner ever complained about your sexual behavior or your porn consumption?

Do you find it difficult to reduce or stop your porn use, even though you know it's hurting your relationship or your well-being?

Have you tried to change your behavior several times without achieving long-term success?

Do you hide your porn consumption, or are you ashamed of it?

Do you need increasingly intense or new pornographic content to reach the same level of arousal?

Do you find that your sexual fantasies or preferences are increasingly at odds with your own values or self-image?

Are you getting yourself into financial trouble by buying pornographic content?

Are you neglecting your hobbies, friendships, family, or work because of your porn use?

Do you find it harder than it used to be to experience sexual arousal or an orgasm with a real person?

Do you turn to pornography especially when you feel stressed, lonely, bored, frustrated, or sad?

If you answer “yes” to several of these questions and feel that pornography is increasingly taking control of your life, a session with a sex therapist can help you better understand the underlying issues and develop new ways of dealing with stress, emotions, and sexuality.

Limits of Scientific Research

However, research on this topic has some important limitations.

It is often impossible to say definitively whether pornography leads to lower relationship satisfaction or whether people who are already dissatisfied are more likely to consume pornography. Furthermore, the correlations measured are usually relatively weak. Moral beliefs and religiosity also influence the results, in some cases significantly. In addition, the term “pornography” encompasses a wide variety of content and forms of use, which many studies fail to distinguish adequately from one another.

Sources

Various reference books on Sexocorporel, David Schnarch, and attachment theory.

Wright, Tokunaga, Kraus & Klann (2017), “Pornography Consumption and Satisfaction: A Meta-Analysis, ” *Human Communication Research* (The most well-known meta-analysis on this topic to date evaluated 50 studies involving over 50,000 participants.)

Willoughby, Leonhardt & Augustus (2021) “Curvilinear Associations Between Pornography Use and Relationship Satisfaction, Sexual Satisfaction, and Relationship Stability,” *Computers in Human Behavior*.
