The saint and the whore

In the last Women's Lounge Online (a group coaching format for women), we looked at various aspects of femininity . Two female archetypes, the saint and the whore, are difficult to reconcile for many women and therefore lead to problems in bed. In this blog article, I would like to focus on these archetypes and the associated beliefs and prejudices that seem to be particularly persistent.

></p> <h2>Two female archetypes: the <em>saint</em> and the <em>whore</em></h2> <p>We looked at two female archetypes that appear to be opposites: the<em> saint</em> and the<em> whore.</em> In conversation with each other, we quickly realized that the presence of these two archetypes can cause considerable difficulties for many women. Particularly in relation to their own sexuality, it can lead to problems if women do not integrate these two facets of femininity and instead suppress them or project them onto other women.</p> <h2>The longing for completion</h2> <p>People long to be complemented by another person. For this reason, we look for partners who are not too different from us, but not too similar either. Many men have a special dream when it comes to finding a partner: they want many different qualities in a partner, including conscientiousness and loyalty, reliability and emotional stability. It is a great challenge for any woman to combine these qualities!</p> <h2>What many men dream of</h2> <p>However, the man's dream goes further: his partner should also be playful and sensual, impulsive and emotional, full of admiration and erotic attraction. She should be able to relinquish control sexually and surrender to passion. She should also be willing to experiment in bed at any time, just to please him.</p> <h2>The longing of men</h2> <p>This is often the deepest male longing: a woman who carries both sides within her, the <em>saint</em> and the <em>whore</em> at the same time. Unfortunately, however, quite a few men fail to integrate these two manifestations of femininity, so that they often marry the saint and go to bed with the whore. The unsuccessful integration leads to ambivalent feelings and behavior and ultimately often to a split: different needs are satisfied by different people. The faithful, desexualized partner and mother of their own children stays at home, while the hot lover (or sex worker) satisfies their <em>animalistic </em>desires.</p> <h2>The saint and the whore</h2> <p>The terms <em>saint</em> and <em>whore</em> are deeply rooted in cultural, religious and social discourse and are often symbolic of the ambivalent notions of femininity. These two archetypes represent not only different views of women, but also the moral, social and psychological contexts and attributions associated with them. In this article, I summarize the origins and effects of these dual gender images and highlight their significance for women in our society as well as the effects on female sexual experience and behavior.</p> <h2>From antiquity to Christianity</h2> <p>The roots of the <em>saint</em> and <em>whore</em> archetypes can be traced back to antiquity. In many cultures, women were perceived as either pure and virtuous or sinful and seductive. This division can be seen in the Christian tradition, where the Virgin Mary represents the <em>saint</em>. The <em>whore </em>, on the other hand, is often represented by figures such as Mary Magdalene, who are considered morally questionable. These attributions have far-reaching effects: Not only on women's self-image and their role in society, but also on a deeper level. The sense of one's own femininity as a sexual dimension of being is not clear and self-evident.</p> <h2>Effects</h2> <p>The dual view of women has not only cultural but also psychological effects. Women who identify with the image of the saint often find themselves under enormous pressure to live up to expectations of purity and selflessness. This can lead to a loss of self-identity and a lack of awareness of their own boundaries, as well as constant conformity to the expectations of others.</p> <h2>Fear of rejection</h2> <p>In order not to be rejected by the community, women often deny the <em>whore part.</em> Instead, they project this part onto other women. The projection can go so far that women can become the worst judges of other women - a behavior that makes the division even deeper. As a result, women lose their vitality and natural access to their sexual potency. On a sexual level, women who identify with this archetype often experience themselves as cut off from their physicality and have difficulty seeing themselves as sexually active and desiring women.</p> <h2>Shame or fun</h2> <p>On the other hand, women who are stigmatized as <em>whores</em> can struggle with shame, ostracism and low self-esteem. Some nevertheless manage to enjoy life and develop their sexual power.</p> <p>However, these attributions often lead to an inner conflict, as all women (I would like to say all people) carry aspects of both <em>holiness</em> and <em>whoredom</em> in their lives. These tensions can lead to a sense of inadequacy and inner conflict that affects individual well-being and often puts relationships to the test.</p> <p>The separation of saints and whores also has significant social implications. In many cultures, women who do not adhere to traditional gender roles are quickly regarded as <em>whores</em>, while women who conform to expectations receive respect and esteem as <em>saints </em>. These attributions not only promote gender stereotypes, but also contribute to the continued use of violence against women and control over their sexuality.</p> <h2>The right to self-determination</h2> <p>In recent decades, many people have increasingly sought to challenge these dual gender images and promote a more inclusive understanding of femininity. This questioning has helped to challenge societal norms and encourage women to define their identity beyond holiness or sin.</p> <p>Many women are embarking on a search for their own identity and no longer allow themselves to be pigeonholed, but are striving to integrate different parts of their own personality and to achieve a greater, more holistic complexity.</p> <p> </p> <h2>Overcoming the divide - developing female potential</h2> <p>The terms <em>saint </em>and <em>whore</em> are more than just stereotypical labels; they are an expression of deeply rooted social and cultural norms that shape women's lives. Dealing with these archetypes is necessary in order to recognize the complexity of female identity and sexuality. This consists of the integration of different manifestations of femininity.
